January is National Mentoring Month, a time to recognize the incredible role mentors play in shaping the lives of young people and strengthening our community. At the Greater Scranton YMCA, we know that mentoring builds confidence, encourages achievement, and creates a sense of belonging for the next generation.
At the Y, mentorship happens in many forms, whether it’s a coach encouraging a young athlete, a staff member guiding teens in leadership programs, or volunteers who dedicate their time to provide encouragement and support.
• Why Mentorship Matters: Research shows that young people with mentors are more likely to stay in school, make healthy choices, and achieve their goals. Yet, 1 in 3 kids in the U.S. grows up without a mentor.
• Local Impact: Community members are encouraged to get involved during National Mentoring Month by volunteering as a mentor with the Y, enrolling youth in programs that provide positive mentorship, and supporting YMCA programs that strengthen youth development
