Wellbeing Initiative

The YMCA is known as a place where an individual can seek community, connection and physical wellness. Through the Wellbeing Initiative we seek to add to that legacy by also making the YMCA a place where individuals, families and the community can go in order to cultivate and strengthen their emotional and mental health and wellness.

We believe in the pursuit of health, happiness, recovery and a full and satisfying life in the community. We acknowledge that each individuals path will be different, but by addressing every aspect of one’s wellness we can help improve a person’s life. Since we believe that cultivating and strengthening an individual’s emotional and mental health and wellness is a critical component to one’s overall health and wellness, all programming through the Wellbeing Initiative will be FREE to participants.

The Wellbeing Initiative will offer the YMCA the community a myriad of opportunities to enhance and support their emotional and mental health and wellness. We will do this through a combination of educational and awareness programming, specialized instruction, social-emotional learning, workshops and seminars, community collaborations, as well as connection to community resources and services.

Art4Healing

Art4Healing is an abstract method of painting created by Laurie Zagon. It supports emotional healing through art and creative expression for those living with pain, grief, fear, or stress. Art4Healing allows participants to learn a new way of communicating through color that encourages emotional breakthroughs and further enhances the therapy process. The creative process and emotional healing often interest when words are not adequate. It’s like a secret code. Only you know what is on the canvas.

This abstract style of art helps to give pain a voice and meaning.  Art doesn’t always have to be pretty. It can get messy like our feelings. No painting experience is required. It’s a connection of colors and feelings.

Classes are FREE for anyone in the community!

Breathwork Journey: Meditation Class

Breathwork, Pranayama, and Meditation are some of the most powerful tools to improve your mental and physical health. Scientific studies have proven mental benefits like stress reduction, insomnia prevention, and emotion control as well as physical benefits like pain relief and a boost to the immune system. In this class, we will use different breathing techniques that will remind you to breathe fully and deeply, boost your energy levels, help to relieve stress, anxiety, and depression, all while healing mind and body, and bringing us to a higher state of Meditation. An open mind and an open heart are recommended for this practice. Class will be led by 200-hour RYT Bob Ruddy.

Class will be held in the multipurpose/blue room.

Groove and Grow With Me

Hatha Yoga For Healing

Though yoga consists of various postures, yoga’s greatest gift is the ability to be still. Hatha Yoga for Healing helps us find a place of powerful relaxation- where we can release our tightly wound tensions, and deeply reconnect to ourselves. This class combines a classical movement practice consisting of pranayama (breathing technique) and asana (physical postures) with bioenergetic healing methods that help unwind and pacify our systems, allowing us to process our emotions and promote ease and well being for body and mind.

Jessica Wentlent (Osborne) is an experienced registered yoga teacher (E-RYT 200), a registered prenatal yoga teacher (RPYT), and a certified Pilates mat instructor. Jessica studied authentic Hatha Yoga at the world-renowned yoga school Sivananda in Neuville-aux-Bois, France.

Healthy Minds in Harmony

200 Hour Registered Yoga Instructor Donna Pretko will walk participants through meditation, compassionate yoga poses, and pranayama (breathing practice) to release stress and calm the mind and body. Stressed Out? Aromatherapy Can Help You to Feel Calmer!

A scent can be more than a passing pleasant experience. If you’re feeling stressed out or tired, scents can help to lift your mood, and help you to feel calmer and more energized. When you use scents to improve your health or mood, you’re using aromatherapy, which is a form of complementary therapy. In aromatherapy, essential oils that are distilled from plants are absorbed into the body either through the pores of the skin during massage, or by inhalation through the nose. The scents released by the oil act on the hypothalamus, a part of the brain that influences the hormonal system. Individual responses to scents are highly personal, but a scent can affect your mood, metabolism, and stress levels.

You will make your own aromatherapy rollerball!

Thriving Minds: Guided Imagery Meditation

Want to get away? Doing so can be as easy as closing your eyes and using “guided imagery” to take you to a place where there’s no room for the frustrations of daily life. This meditation practice will include sounds of the ocean while being guided to use your imagination and your 5 senses while incorporating deep breathing.
